City of Angels and Demons

Not a great name, but that's what I'm going with. That's the name of my new campaign/setting/whatever. Guess where it's set. Guess. Come on guess. It's set in LA. Anyways what do I have so far? Well a whole lot of nothing, but there's also some something mixed in so it's OK.

I don't want to make a cityscape in pixel art right now so I'll just make a image for this in a later post.

But enough meaningless talk, let's get into the pointless description!

So here's the digs. Los Angeles, beginning of the 21st century. Things are chill, except for the parts where they're not, which is like, most of the parts. But things are especially not chill for those cursed with the Sight. For underneath the facade of the city is a world of horrors. I mean, that's no surprise. It's LA. But underneath the world of mundane horrors is a world filled with creatures whose mere presence could cause a hardened criminal to empty their bowels faster than a room full of teenagers empties a box full of Pizza Hut Stuffed Crust Pizza. Creatures that for most, simply don't exist. But their presence affects everything. A infestation of goblins in the basement leads to uncharacteristic aggression and greed in the residents of the house above. Snake people in a crypt sap the life force of visiting mourners. Weird snail spirit makes you not be able to find your house or whatever happened in Bakemonogatari. It's been a while I don't really remember. There are people, however, who can see these beings and their lairs. These people are called the Sighted.

You are a Sighted.

Sighted do not usually live long, as they attract both negative and positive attention from the creatures that live in the darkness once their Sight develops around the age of 14. These monsters, faeries, youkai, spirits, or whatever you want to call them aren't universally malicious. But even their favor can lead to misfortune, as they attempt to grant boons with little knowledge of human nature and fragility. Those Sighted that do survive long usually do so by avoiding all areas populated by spirits like the plague, usually leading to hermetic lifestyles. On the other hand, some Sighted - like you for example - seek to live among both people and spirits, and so dedicate their lives to delving into the pockets of the ancient world that the spirits create, and bringing back treasure that the wizards among them can use to support the barriers protecting the weaker Sighted from monster attacks.

I stopped reading after you used the word "chill", what does all that mean?

Basically it's Urban Fantasy without needing the Fantasy to be Urban. There are encounters with spirits in the "overworld" of Los Angeles, but most of the action will be in what are essentially pocket dimensions hidden away in various places.
