So that title is getting a little bit forced, huh. Anyways I've slowed down my movie watching pace a bit I think. Been watching more UltraSeven and stuff instead, I guess. Still, saw some more good stuff.
The Return of Captain Invincible
This is a weird movie. It almost immediately goes *way* goofier than I was expecting ~ and then halfway through turns out like, really earnestly patriotic? Patriotism always hits me strange. I've listened to enough Green Day to hate the things that have been done in the name of <America>; I certainly understand the many ways in which that idea has brought harm. But despite that, when I witness acts of patriotism I feel hope that the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness can someday be ensured for all. Captain Invincible seems to deal with that, in some small way. <America> will fail you and hurt you again and again, but <America> will also always be there to empower your acts of justice, kindness, good.
Also Christopher Lee sings an evil song so that's always great. I liked this movie.
Defenders of Space
So this is a low budget English dub of a low budget Korean animated film. The mech in it is just Inferno from Transformers. Like, exact same design, probably traced. I dunno what else to say about it really. I liked this movie.
Invasion of Astro-Monster
This was a very pretty film, the new champion of best looking Godzilla movie. Godzilla is less of a punching bag but he's still nowhere near the level of gravitas he had in the first two movies.
Also, interestingly, a very personal Godzilla movie. It felt like a story about characters ~ for all I loved the other Godzilla movies, most of the characters feel like purely reactive roles; they show the human response to giant monkey punch Godzilla. To be clear, I think this works ~ in Godzilla Raids Again, for example, it's excellent watching people simply try to live while Godzilla is irradiating all the fish. But this one actually had humans with character development, though it is still rather melodramatic, and that's a nice change of pace. I liked this movie.
Mirai Ninja / Cyber Ninja
Holy shit, this is the most badass movie I've seen in ages. It deserves a Grammy, Emmy, Tony, *and* an Oscar for costume design. Every extra puts like 115% into their tumbles and deaths. It has laser arquebuses. Apparently it's based on an arcade game, and it works as a tie-in because now I want to play that arcade game. I liked this movie.
